Code of Conduct

Entering and Leaving the Skate Floor:

When skaters are entering or exiting the skate floor they should NEVER use the area depicted in this diagram by red crosses (area generally used by skaters) or black arrows (shows the general direction of the skaters and lines of travel skaters will use). Skaters should plan to exit in good time and make their way carefully towards one of the long side walls on the left or right of the skate floor, looking carefully to make sure it is safe to do so as they move and slowing down appropriately to plan their stop near their chosen seating area.

This diagram represents one of our venues. The guidance regarding entering and exiting the skate floor is the same across all of our venues. If you are not sure please ask. Our staff are happy to help explain or show you.

Direction of Travel whilst Skating:

We normally skate on the floor in an anti-clockwise direction around the cones. There are times during our skating sessions where we may change the direction of skating for a short period of time. This may be a change from anti-clockwise to clockwise. We will tell you when we are doing this and staff on the floor will indicate the change of direction by pointing in the direction they are now travelling. To keep everyone safe we ask everyone to travel in the same direction at all times.

Direction of Travel during some Games:

Also in order for us to facilitate a game, we may skate from right to left, or left to right across the floor.

During times when we are skating from left to right or right to left across the floor we request that people to not skate or walk up and down the sides of the long walls on the left and right sides of the hall. We will usually provide a small separate area for inexperienced skaters (depicted as green ticks for Longbridge or Woodrush Community Centre) or skaters who do not want to participate in the games to skate across during this time.

The exception to this is during speed skates when we ask ALL non-participants to sit in the seating areas for everybody’s safety. It is important that nobody walks up and down the walls, or moves away from the seating areas during this time.

PLEASE NOTE Thorns Academy has a separate area for learners and young families. We ask that inexperienced skaters do not skate on our faster floor (unless invited to do a beginner speed skate) here and also that any faster experienced skaters do not skate in the learner/young families area unless they are carefully practising how to do something new and are being particularly considerate of our less confident skaters. During the speed skate we again ask ALL non-participants to sit in the seating areas for everybody’s safety unless they are skating in the learner area. It is important that nobody walks up and down the walls, or moves away from the seating areas during this time.

Non Skaters on the Skate Floor:

If you have bought a child with you who cannot already skate it is OK to walk next to them or behind them when they are learning to skate. Once they feel confident skating on their own they can be watched from the seating area. If your child falls when you are watching them from the seating area be mindful not to rush across the floor to see if they are OK, doing so without making sure it is safe to do so may put you or other skaters in danger. We have First Aiders and Staff who are vigilant on the skate floor checking children are OK if they fall.

NEVER let a non-skating child run around or play on the skate floor without skates. Non-skating children should not be on the skate floor at any time during our sessions.

Avoid Crowding around on the Skate Floor:

A large group of people all congregating together on the skate floor may cause danger to themselves or others.

If a member of our staff spots something on the floor they think may be a hazard to other skaters they may stop to pick it up or access the risk. This may involve them skating back round to get to it and possibly stopping to look on the floor to find out exactly where the object is and it if is a hazard. If you see someone doing this please don’t be tempted to come up to see what they are doing. If the hazard is a risk to skaters we may stop the session momentarily or ask skaters to avoid a certain area momentarily whilst that area is made safe.

If somebody falls they may be attended to by a First Aider, again please avoid all crowding around to see if the person who has fallen is OK. If you were involved in the fall and are not hurt please carry on skating whilst the injured person is being attended to. Sometimes it may take a short time to access an injury, please avoid the area the skater has fallen whilst this is happening.

Spectating and Storing your belongings:

If you are spectating please do so using the seats provided on the shorter walls of the halls. Never be tempted to sit on the floor on one of the long walls. Skaters may not see you sitting their or may accidentally collide with you. If you are not sure exactly were is safe to sit, please ask a member of staff and we will be happy to help.

Please store your belongings under the seats provided. Please do not leave any belongings on the long walls in the hall. This may cause a danger to others. We cannot be held responsible for loss of unattended belongings.

Removing Skates before leaving the Sports Hall

Wearing skates outside the Sports Hall or Gymnasium is NEVER OK. We only hire the Sports Hall or Gymnasium, not the whole building. Skates should be removed each time you leave the room regardless as to whether this is just quickly popping to the toilet or going home at the end of your skate session.

Eating and Drinking:

You should NEVER drink or eat on the skate floor. This may present a risk to you or the people around you.

Drinks should be kept in spill proof bottles or containers and drunk within the seating areas of the halls. If for some reason a drink does get accidentally spilled in the seating area please notify a member of staff immediately so it can be promptly dealt with.

We would also appreciate you putting any rubbish in the bins provided either during or at the end of the skating session as you are leaving.

Respecting the Skating Environment:

The venues we use are kind enough to let us run our Roller Discos at their facilities. Please respect this. We rent their Sports Hall or Gymnasium and they kindly give us permission to use their toilet facilities. Please be considerate when using their toilets.

Please do use any other parts of the building and leave promptly and respectfully at the end of your skate session.

Smoking or Vaping:

All of our sites operate a STRICTLY NO SMOKING policy and a STRICKLY NO VAPING policy. Please refrain from smoking or vaping anywhere within the building or grounds of any of our venues.
